Nutrition and MPN: Introducing Our New Podcast Series with Carla Not
Global MPN Scientific Foundation launches a new series focused on everyday nutrition, with practical, evidence-based information for patients and caregivers. The introduction and first episode are now available.
What does eating a balanced diet actually mean? How can we better understand food labels? What role do carbohydrates, proteins and fats play? And how can the way we eat influence how we feel day to day?
To explore these and other questions, Global MPN Scientific Foundation is launching a new podcast series on nutrition and MPN, as part of our Wellbeing Project.
The series is led by Carla Not, a clinical dietitian-nutritionist specialized in oncology, and has a simple goal: to provide patients and caregivers with clear information that can help them better understand nutrition and make more informed decisions in everyday life.
A series that starts with the basics
Across the different episodes, Carla will answer some of the questions patients and caregivers ask most frequently.
Topics will include:
Basic nutrition concepts and food groups
How to read food labels
Key nutrients in MPN
The Mediterranean diet
Glycemic index
Low-grade inflammation
Portion control and visceral fat
Mindful eating
The aim is not to present a single “MPN diet,” but to offer tools that help people understand what they eat, why they eat it, and how healthier habits can be built in a way that fits each individual.
Because nutrition is not one-size-fits-all. Individual needs, treatments, symptoms, intolerances and other health conditions also need to be considered.
Episode 1: The five food groups and what they do in the body
Alongside the series introduction, we are also sharing the first full episode:
Nutrition basics: the five food groups and their role in the body
In this episode, Carla starts with the foundations.
Over approximately 18 minutes, she explains how the main food groups are organized and what role each of them plays:
🍎 Fruits and vegetables, as sources of fiber, vitamins, minerals and other bioactive compounds.
🌾 Carbohydrates, as an important source of energy, with particular attention to fiber and glucose response.
🥚 Proteins, which support muscle mass, tissue repair and other essential functions in the body.
🥛 Dairy products, including both their nutritional value and individual tolerance.
🥑 Fats, with a focus on their role in a balanced diet and a review of some ideas inherited from the era of “fat-free” products.
The conversation also covers practical topics such as the difference between red meat and processed meat, alternatives for people with dairy intolerance, kefir, calcium, and a simple way to work toward five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
Understand before restricting
One of the key messages in this first episode is especially useful: before removing a food or an entire food group from our diet, it is important to understand what role it plays and why it is there.
General nutrition recommendations can offer useful guidance, but major dietary changes should always be adapted to the individual.
For people living with a myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), treatments, symptoms or other medical conditions may also mean that some recommendations need to be personalized.
That is why this series is designed as an educational resource, not as individualized nutrition therapy.

In the next episodes, we will continue moving from the basics toward increasingly practical topics: food labels, nutrients, the Mediterranean diet, glucose, inflammation, portion control and mindful eating. Because understanding our nutrition better can also help us take a more active role in our own wellbeing.
Important note: this series is for educational and informational purposes only. It does not replace medical treatment, advice from your hematologist, or individualized guidance from a healthcare professional or registered dietitian-nutritionist.
